Special Session

University Network for Disaster Risk Reduction in Indian Ocean Rim (UN4DRR) is designed to address the urgent needs of three neighboring countries (Maldives, Sri Lanka, and Indonesia) located in the most vulnerable geographical locations to natural disasters. The project aims to enhance their capacity in Disaster Risk Management (DRM) with a particular focus on curriculum development that centers around the utilization of the latest Remote Sensing (RS) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technologies. The project encourages cooperation with national authorities, public and private sectors, offering joint DRRM initiatives and access to short courses for using GIS/RS via online/offline mode. The project also motivates a more proactive cross-region dialogue in DRRM-related educational programs in the realization of capacity building and internationalization.

The UN4DRR project involves the active collaboration of several prestigious universities, each contributing its expertise to bolster disaster risk reduction education in the Indian Ocean Rim. The participating universities include Vrije Universiteit Brussel, University of Nicosia, Universitat Politecnica De Valencia, University of Zagreb, The Maldives National University, University of Peradeniya, University of Colombo, Universitas Syiah Kuala and IPB University.
